What is cabaret?  We like the following description:

A cabaret is a small room, a big piano, and a singer who tells us the story of our hearts. The singular beauty of cabaret is its intimacy. The singer is right there to enchant us. The songs can be from anywhere. If American Popular Song from the 1920s through the 1950s tends to be so big a part of cabaret, it’s because the wit and beauty of the standards serve the form so well … But cabaret is a big tent — and jazz, contemporary pop and show tunes, folk and rock all carry weight. It’s up to the singer and the show. The best cabaret singers show us what it is to be in love and out, to be funny, angry, joyous, lonely, vulnerable, strong, hungry, witty, smart, self-possessed, sad and fierce. It is revealed to us in their stories, in the lyric, the melody, the acting, the theatre, and in the souls of the performers who show us just enough of themselves. The best cabaret shows lead us through an arc with a beginning, a middle and an end, when we know we’ve been touched and moved. Come join us. Cabaret is a home for the heart. It makes a kind of magic that happens nowhere else.
